If you are an adult skater, you will find lots of information and updates to help you. If you are an adult who is currently not skating, we hope that this page will convince you to start.

It used to be that adults who wanted to skate, either after skating as kids or after learning to skate, were relegated to doing endless circles of the ice at public skating sessions. That’s starting to change. As of 2004, there is an adult national championship competition in Canada…..two international competitions for adults…and more and more local, regional, and sectional events, either with separate adult sections or just for adults only.

But…..I can’t skate as well as I used to.
So what? Adult skating is all about fun and participation, and doing the best you can with what you have.

But….I never skated/competed as a kid.
So what? Many adult skaters, those who compete and those who don’t, learned to skate as adults.

But….I don’t like competing.
Well, but if you competed as a child and didn’t enjoy it, you may find things very different at adult competitions. As one competitor said,
”When they say ‘good luck’, they really mean it.” If you’ve never competed before, you’ll have a great time. Adult competitions are social and friendly, and they celebrate everyone’s accomplishments. You can find a list of upcoming competitions here.

But…..everyone else can land more/better jumps than I can.
Adult skating is all about doing your best, being proud of what you can do, and developing your skills.

But…I’m too old.
NO, YOU’RE NOT!! The oldest competitor at this year’s Canadian adult national championships was 67 years old.

But…I’m too tall/short/fat/out of shape.
Adult skating is a great (and fun) way to get back into shape….and adult skating also has participants of all shapes and sizes.

But…I don’t see any other adult skaters at my club.
Then go and be one! Ask your club registrar about signing up for a session. The other thing you can do is look here for a list of clubs in the BC/YT section that are currently offering adult programming.

But….I don’t have a coach.
It’s not difficult to find one. Ask your club coaches, or ask for a recommendation. Some coaches may be uncomfortable at first coaching an adult, but when they see that adults generally listen to them, pay attention, work hard, show up on time, and practice regularly, they usually change their minds.

See you on the ice!
