BC Adult Skaters Ready to Compete at 2015 Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships

A contingent of 34 free skaters, interpretive skaters and ice dancers along with 2 synchro teams will be participating at the 2015 Skate Canada Adult Figure Skating Championships in Calgary, AB this coming Easter weekend.  This is the highest number of skaters that we have seen at Adult Nationals since the competition was held in Kamloops, BC in 2013.

The competition will take place from Friday, April 3 to Sunday, April 5 and will be sure to include some inspirational and heartwarming performances.

Working with Joanne will be Manon Perron coach of Olympic Bronze Medallist Joannie Rochette, former Canadian World Team member Ben Ferreira and ISU Technical Specialist Shae Zukiwsky. Joanne McLeod wins Sport BC Female Coach of the Year

Skate Canada BC/YK is pleased to announce that on March 12th at the Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards Banquet Joanne Mcleod won the Female Coach of the Year Award. Joanne has produced over 50 National and International medallists and 3 Olympians. Her competitive success is unprecedented in Skate Canada BC/YK history and we are all thrilled that she has been recognized by the BC Sporting Community.

Supporting Karen Gains Momentum

Skate Canada BC/YK Section is pleased to announce that the Rossland SC in the Kootenay Region is donating the proceeds of their Ice Show March 11th to the Karen Magnussen support fund. “We are thrilled to see such support coming from all over the province and in fact North America for one of our own in such need. We commend and thank the Rossland SC for their show of support to Karen who has given so much to our skating community over her lifetime," said Ted Barton Executive Director of Skate Canada BC/YK.

Skate Canada BC/YK Section to Induct 4 Individuals to 2015 Class of Hall of Fame

Burnaby, B.C. (February 10, 2015) – Skate Canada BC/YK Section has selected four individuals for induction to its 2015 class. The induction ceremony will take place at the Skate Canada BC/YK Section Annual Awards Banquet held at the Delta Burnaby Hotel on Saturday May 2, 2015.

Karen brought Canada’s last Women’s World figure skating title back home to Canada in 1973 with class and pride. She represented the province of British Columbia at the highest level as an athlete and ambassador. Her Foundation, established shortly after winning the world title, has raised close to a million dollars to annually help young BC skaters continue to grow and achieve.

Twelve figure skaters named to Team BC for the Canada Winter Games

Burnaby, BC – Twelve B.C. Figure Skaters from seven clubs have qualified for the 2015 Canada Winter Games. Team BC will compete at the Games in Prince George this February. The athletes were named to the team following the conclusion of the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Kingston, Ontario last week.

Novice Dance Team, Ashlynne Stairs and Lee Royer (Burnaby), and Novice Woman, McKenna Colthorp(Kelowna) lead the team to the games after recently placing 4th in their categories in Kingston.
