RICHMOND—The men took centre stage on Saturday at the BC-Yukon Sectional championships with gold medals being awarded in Senior, Junior, Novice and Pre-Novice categories at Minoru Arena.

Connaught’s Mitchell Gordon continues to impress as he won the Senior men’s title over two other competitors. The 2012 national Junior champion and seventh last year in his first appearance at nationals in Senior ranks, Gordon easily won the Sectional title with a combined score of 187.03 points, that total more than his two competitors combined.
 

KELOWNA SKATERS FINISH ONE-TWO IN PRE-NOVICE WOMEN’S EVENT

RICHMOND—The team that will represent the BC-Yukon Section at the Skate Canada Challenge began to take shape here Friday at Minoru Arena as the huge Pre-Novice women’s field (51 skaters) determined who will make the trip to Regina next month.
 

The top four finishers at these Sectional championships in Pre-Novice through Senior will go on to the Challenge event in the Saskatchewan city December 4-8.

RICHMOND—Skaters from host club Connaught, Kelowna and Burnaby captured the first three gold medals on Thursday as the 2014 Skate Canada BC-Yukon Sectionals opened at Minoru Arena.

Connaught’s Beres Clements topped a field of seven in the Juvenile men’s event, scoring 32.21 points to edge past Tyler Gunara of Burnaby with 31.63 points. Coquitlam’s Cayden McKenzie-Cook finished third with 26.05 points.
 

Jeremy Ten wins Bronze at Nebelhorn Trophy

OBERTSDORF, Germany - Jeremy Ten of Vancouver and ice dancers Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam of Barrie, Ont., won bronze medals on Saturday at the Nebelhorn Trophy senior figure skating competition.

In men’s competition, Nobunari Oda of Japan took the gold with 262.98 points, Jason Brown of the U.S. was second at 228.43 and Ten followed at 205.56. He ranked third in the short program Friday and fifth in the long.

Sad News: BC/YK Section Mourns the Loss of Coach Jack Boyle

It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of well known skating coach Jack Boyle.  Mr. Boyle was a longtime skating coach at the Vancouver Skating Club out of the Vancouver Forum at the PNE and taught at summer schools at the Capilano Winter Club. Jack was a big opera music fan and who brought professionalism to the ice.

SALT LAKE CITY - Ice dance teams Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., and Nicole Orford of Burnaby, B.C., and Thomas Williams of Okotoks, Alta., earned silver and bronze medals on Saturday to conclude the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic.

Two-time world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the U.S., won the gold medal with 183.69 points. Weaver and Poje followed at 161.99 and Orford and Williams were third at 137.60.
