DAY ONE—BC-YUKON SKATE CANADA SECTIONALS

A L-O-N-G DAY FOR SKATERS AND JUDGES

PARKSVILLE—Four champions were crowned here Thursday, opening day of the BC-Yukon Skate Canada Sectional figure skating championships, a day when 102 skaters from all parts of the Province took part.

The championships run through Sunday.

You can`t get much tighter then the results of the top three finishers in the men`s Juvenile free skate, the top three separated by point 8 points.

Killarney Centre`s Ehren Chang won the gold medal with 27.11 points followed by Burnaby`s Brian Le with 27.08 and BC Centre of Excellence skater Tyler Gunara with 27.03 points.

The final of the Under 11 Juvenile women`s free skate wasn`t as close for the gold but very tight for the silver and bronze.

Kelowna`s Olivia Gran fashioned a flawless performance to skate away with the title, scoring 32.14 points. Oak Bay`s Alisa Lyesina snuck past Connaught`s Madge Man Chit Seung for silver, Lyesina scoring 28.81 to Sheung`s 28.07

Connaught`s Elvie Carroll outskated a large field in the Juvenile women`s group One free skate, easily taking the title with 36.64 points. Coquitlam`s Alexandra Canning takes home the silver medal, accumulating 31.94 points while Carroll`s Connaught clubmate Rachel de Mello was right behind with the bronze medal and 31.70 points.

Vancouver Skating Club’s Kyuri Kim scored a convincing 38.33 victory in capturing the group Two Juvenile women’s event outdistancing runner-up Janice Heu of BC Centre of Excellence (31,74) and bronze medalist Danica Vangsgaard of Connaught (29.52).

Competition continues Friday with the first event starting at 9 a.m.
