PARKSVILLE—She was fifth after the short program but first when it counted most, at the end of the competition.

Whitehorse’s Rachel Pettitt from the Section’s farthest northern club, Arctic Edge in Whitehorse YT, slipped past four others and a field of 53 in total to capture the BC-Yukon Sectionals Pre-Novice women’s title here Friday.

Her winning margin was just point 13 over runner-up Danielle Gordon of Connaught, who led the field after Thursday’s short program. She finished with 82.19 points while Megan Yim of BC Centre of Excellence finished third with 82.12 points. She was second after the short program.

Rachel took the title by scoring 52.64 points in her free skate while Gordon scored 50.43 and Yim actually finished second in the free skate with 51.17 points.

In the only other final contested Friday, Megan Geddes and Gay Tsai of Abbotsford scored 39.49 points to win the Pre-Novice Pair title over the only pair entered, Tessa Jones and Matthew DenBoer of Victoria who finished with 37.02 points.

Meanwhile, Canada’s number three ranked male skater, Jeremy Ten of North Shore Winter Club took a sizeable lead over reigning Canadian Junior champion Mitchell Gordon of Connaught following the Senior men’s short program.

Despite falling twice, Ten scored 65.16 points while Gordon finished with 61.40 points. Graeme Gordon of Coquitlam (no relation) is in third place with 48.00 points.

The Senior women’s event is much closer after their short sprogram. The leader is Jacqueline Leniuk of Terrace with 33.80 points followed by Coquitlam skaters Rebecca Hayman (33.72) and Larissa Horobec (33.46)

Competition continues Saturday with first event at the Oceanside Arena 9 a.m.
