Sun, 10 Nov 2013

RICHMOND—The men took centre stage on Saturday at the BC-Yukon Sectional championships with gold medals being awarded in Senior, Junior, Novice and Pre-Novice categories at Minoru Arena.

Connaught’s Mitchell Gordon continues to impress as he won the Senior men’s title over two other competitors. The 2012 national Junior champion and seventh last year in his first appearance at nationals in Senior ranks, Gordon easily won the Sectional title with a combined score of 187.03 points, that total more than his two competitors combined.

Sungod’s Kurtis Hori finished second with 132.96 points while Connaught’s Wejie Chen finished third with a combined score of 117.37 points.

Perhaps the performance of the night, though, came from Burnaby’s Eric Liu, who fashioned a personal best combined score of 164.17 in capturing the Junior men’s title over his only opponent, Connaught’s Shawn Cuevas who finished with 132.67 points.

Vancouver’s Alexander Lawrence captured the Novice men’s title with 105.2 points finishing ahead of Kelowna’s Kelly Basisty (89.95) and Connaught’s Kurtis Schreiber (89.10).

The Pre-Novice men’t title was won by Coquitlam’s Benjam Papp who went wire to wire and scored 73.41 points overall. Burnaby’s Brian Le (70.69) and Oliver Astren of Port Coquitlam (66.76) took the bronze medal.

In women’s competition earlier in the day, all short programs, Connaught’s Larkyn Austman took the lead in Senior ladies with 50.61 points; Kelowna’s Julianne Delaurier leads the Junior ladies with 46.34 points and Kitsilano’s Megan Yim is the leader in Novice women with 38.09 points.

The four-day Sectionals conclude Sunday with the top four winners in Pre-Novice through Senior going on to represent the BC-Yukon Section at Skate Canada Challenge, December 4-8 in Regina.
