We are currently seeking a qualified individual to join our team as a coach, starting in mid-August 2024. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing coaching services to SFSC members, helping them improve their skills and reach their full potential on the ice.

Job Summary:

Effectively collaborate with a team and demonstrate a willingness to work closely with coaching staff and SFSC Board. Follow the Skate Canada Program format and club guidelines. Participate in a wide range of club activities, including on- and off-ice classes and coaching of skaters in various levels, including: 

  • PreCanskate
  • CanSkate
  • PreSTAR
  • STARSkate
  • AdultSkate,
  • CanPowerSkate

The SFSC is a vibrant and active skating club with a membership of over 100 individuals. Our club offers 12-15 hours of ice time each week, accompanied by an additional 2 hours of off-ice training with a skating season typically running from late August to the end of March.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for following Skate Canada coaching and program guidelines from Canskate, StarSkate & CompetitiveSkate
  • Instruction must follow the Skate Canada Program format and any specific Club directions.
  • Provide instruction to PreCanskate, CanSkate, PreSTAR, STARSkate, and CanPowerSkate skaters
  • Provide group and private lessons to skaters making every effort to cover all the elements of their level
  • Provide lessons in freeskate, skills, dance and choreography  
  • Attend all ice sessions provided by SFSC
  • Demonstrate proper use of equipment, techniques and methods of proper movements to achieve proficiency in activity
  • Explains and enforces safety, rules and regulations
  • Arriving prepared and on time (at least 15 minutes before the session)
  • Assist Head Coach with determining skater placement and group combinations
  • Evaluate skaters on assessments and complete forms required by the program
  • Assist skaters in their on- and off-ice activities and provide support and extra direction as requested by Head Coach
  • Select music and choreograph a program for individual skaters or groups to perform for competitions, the year-end Carnival, or other special event
  • Assist with coordination for special events such as annual Carnival, Club Competitions, local skating performances, Awards Banquet, and Guest Coach Seminars
  • Must attend training and refresher training sessions as directed by the Board and/or Head Coach
  • Aiding Head Coach or Board in other duties as assigned or delegated
  • Must notify Head Coach regarding absences and you are responsible to obtain substitutes as needed
  • Provide monthly reports to the Head Coach and/or the Board of Directors

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Regional Coach trained or higher
  • Completed Star 1-5 Assessment training
  • Active member of Skate Canada in good standing
  • Related off ice experience including strength/conditioning and or ballet/dance is an asset

Skills, Experience, and Professional Traits:

  • Previous Coaching experience including choreography of programs
  • Experience and desire to coach all levels including Canskate, Prestar, Dance, Skills and Freeskate
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other coaches, Board Members, Head Coach and parents
  • Ability to motivate and energize others
  • Sensitivity and interest in working with young children
  • Energy, assertiveness, initiative, creativity and willingness to try new approaches and techniques
  • Being a team-player and work well as part of a team
  • Must be reliable and responsible

Additional duties under a separate contract could include:

  • Carnival Director
  • Canskate Coordinator
  • Office Administrator

Hours of work: Approximately 10-12 hours/week but could vary dependent on special events or performance needs. Travel to regional competitions with Starskaters on weekends in December, January and February or March. Attend a regional skater and/or professional development seminar on weekend. 

Other: This program runs from August 2024 to March 2025. Taking extended time off during this period is strongly discouraged and will not be guaranteed. Please check with Head Coach or Board Chair.
