Job Summary

The Director of Figure Skating / Head Coach, is responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of all figure skating programs at the Club, while ensuring and upholding him / her / them self, and all coaches, to the Skate Canada Coaching Standard of Ethics at all times.

Key Accountabilities:

  • The Director of Skating is responsible for successfully delivering all dryland and skating programs at the club. Programs include:
    • PreCanSkate, CanSkate, StarSkate, CompetitiveSkate
  • Establish and maintain communication with skaters, families, coaches, board members, clubs, officials, and Skate Canada
  • Work with the LSC Board for the recruitment, development, and assessment of the Club coaching team, including the assisting with the completion of yearly performance and development reviews / discussions
  • Advise the Board on technical aspects of the sport and Skate Canada best practices and regulations, ensuring to make suggestions / recommendations to update programs in compliance with Skate Canada directives, on an ongoing basis.
  • In collaboration with the Board, develop and implement schedules and programs in accordance with the LSC strategic plan and skaters needs
  • Analyze performance and development of all skaters and goal setting with both athletes and the coaching team, implementing training / coaching tactics and practice sessions accordingly. Meet with skaters / parents to discuss skaters and ensure alignment between skaters’ goals, parents’ understanding of sport and Coach recommended action plan to help each skater reach their goals
  • Determine test schedule for Star skaters, and work with Test Chair to ensure test days are held according to Skate Canada rules and regulations
  • Strategize development training, researching upcoming seminars, competitions, and development opportunities for all skaters and inform Coaches, Board and Skaters of such opportunities.
  • Prepare figure skaters for competitive events
  • Responsible for the overall delivery of our bi-annual ice show and special events.
  • Develop and implement timeline for Coach meetings, assigning Coaches to sessions based on eligibility, availability, and seniority, at all times considering best fit for skater development.
  • Ability to work with team-based coaching model; assign coaches to private / group lessons for each Star Skater and monitor Coach and Skater progress. Make any changes required (provided feasible) if there is a Skater / Coach disconnect. Where not feasible, notify President to collaboratively seek solutions.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Able to dedicate 15 – 20 hours / week, in addition to any on ice time, during the Fall / Winter season (6 days week); and 10 – 15 hours / week during the Spring / Summer season
  • Must be registered and in good standing with Skate Canada
  • Skate Canada Regional Coach Course and also must have completed or hold:
    • Valid first aid
    • Clear screening
    • Respect in sport training
    • Skate Canada’s Code of Ethics
    • Skate Canada NCCP Provincial Coach, would be preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of figure skating coaching required
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills
  • Synchronized skating experience, is considered an asset
