Arctic Winter Games

A group of BC/YK data, technical and judging officials returned recently from the Arctic Winter Games (AWG). This international multi-sport event rallies athletes from circumpolar regions of the most northerly nations including Alaska, Yukon, Northern Alberta, North West Territories, Sapmí (pronounced Sami, which includes Norway, Sweden and Finland), Nunavut, Nunavik (Northern Quebec), Greenland and Yamal (in Siberia, Russia). The AWG include sports that we would see at the Canada Winter Games such as hockey, figure skating, badminton, skiing and so forth.  But they also include traditional sports of the Inuit and Dene peoples.  Incredible events such as Kneel Jumping, Knuckle Hop, Alaska High Kick, Snow Snake and Sledge Jumping are among these amazing sports.  Check out the AWG website to see some video footage and learn more about this celebration of Northern cultures.

"Mushing", which is dog sled racing, is among the sports seen at the Games.  The BC/YK figure skating officials were treated to a memorable morning of mushing. In photo, left to right:  Jim (owner of the dogs), Karen Clyde (DIO from Whitehorse), Sherri McAndless,  Sally Rehorick, Sheri Blaker (DIO from Whitehorse), Joanne Nichol, Syd Hughes, Sharon Dahl, Jane Sawbridge and Roy (musher).
