Juniors Travel to Australia for Stop Number Two on the ISU Junior Grand Prix Circuit

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will send a team of four skaters to Brisbane, Australia for the second of seven stops on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit. The event will run from September 7-11, 2011 at the Iceworld Boondall Arena. Canada will have a total of three entries, one in men’s, one in ladies and one in ice dance.

Liam Firus, 19, North Vancouver, B.C., is the Canadian entry in the men’s division. This is his third year on the junior circuit. In 2010, he placed fifth and third respectively at his two assignments, Brasov and Sheffield. He also finished sixth at the 2011 Canadian Figure Skating Championships in the senior category. Firus is coached by Lorna Bauer at the Vancouver Skating Club.

In the ladies category, Alexandra Najarro, 18, Richmond Hill, Ont., is the Canadian entry. This is her fourth year competing on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit. In 2010 she placed 10th in Brasov and placed seventh in Sheffield. Najarro competed as a senior at the 2011 Canadian Figure Skating Championships and placed fourth. She trains with Tracey Wainman at the York Region Skating Academy WC.

Nicole Orford, 18, Burnaby, B.C., and Thomas Williams, 20, Okotoks, Alta., will compete in ice dance. This is their second year on the junior circuit. In 2010 they placed fifth in Ostrava and third in Sheffield. Orford and Williams are also the 2011 Canadian Junior Ice Dance Gold Medalists. They are coached by Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe at the B.C. Centre of Excellence.

Petra Burka of Toronto, Ont., will act as the team leader, and Nicole Leblanc-Richard of Dieppe, N.B., and Lorna Schroder of Georgetown, Ont., will be the Canadian officials at the event.
